admineThekwini municipality officials managing the Isipingo temporary shelter in Durban, say foreign nationals clashed with them when they tried to close it down on Friday night.
Officials wanted to move the remaining 283 foreign nationals — many of whom are Congolese and Burundians – to the Chatsworth camp, but they refused.
The shelters were opened for foreigners who were displaced by xenophobic attacks last month. eThekwini municipality mayor, Mr James Nxumalo, says they have decided to keep the Isipingo camp open for now while the municipality engages the provincial government on the matter. “The officials were recommending that the numbers in Isipingo shelter have gone down to 283 and they were suggesting that we need to move those people to Chatsworth so that they can close that site in Isipingo.
“Now the report that we have received is that the people who are residing in the shelter in Isipingo, were actually refusing to go to Chatsworth.
“That’s where the problem is … but now we are saying we will convene a meeting next week so that we can sit down, and see how we can resolve this matter amicably,” explains Mr Nxumalo. — SABC
