AN illegal foreign currency dealer from Masvingo allegedly lost about $2,800 to two armed robbers masquerading as clients at a service station situated 2km from the city along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, police confirmed yesterday.Masvingo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the incident happened on Monday at around 3.20AM. He said the suspects fled after committing the crime and are still at large.

“I can confirm receiving a report to the effect that two armed robbers pounced on foreign exchange dealers at Exor Service Station and got away with $2,444 and R4,000. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects,” said Asst Insp Nduna.

According to foreign currency delears at Exor, on Monday just before dawn, Isaac Mugwadi, 31, of Rujeko C, was conducting his business of dealing in foreign currency when the two armed robbers pounced.

“A man appeared from the back, grabbed Mugwadi before twisting his right hand as Mugwadi talked to colleagues. Mugwadi had wads of United State dollars and some rand notes in his possession,” said a fellow money changer who preferred anonymity.

Another foreign currency dealer said Mugwadi did not put much effort as he wrestled with the robber thinking it was one of his colleagues.

“Mugwadi was taken aback when he turned his head only to realise that the person who had seized his money was a stranger. He shouted for help and his colleagues and other travellers gave chase.

“The robber fled with Mugwadi, other dealers and travellers in hot pursuit. When the robber realised that he was being cornered, he produced a pistol.

“He fired one shot in the air and another towards the direction of the mob forcing everyone to disperse.”

An accomplice emerged from the crowd, acted as if he was giving chase before fleeing, apparently to join his partner in crime. The suspects ran  towards Rujeko suburb,” said the witness.
