Sixty four pool players that are going to take part in the National Elite Pool Association of Zimbabwe (NEPAZ) on Saturday at Bulawayo’s Masters Billiards Pool Centre, will expected to put on formal attire comprising a black pair of trousers, matching shoes and a white shirt.
As if that will not be enough, NEPAZ president Geshem Nesh, said consumption of alcohol at the venue would not be allowed.
“Pool is a professional sport and as such for this tournament all the participants will be expected to put on a black pair of trousers, black shoes and a white shirt. However, spectators can put on whatever they want. The tournament is being played at Masters Billiards Pool Centre, a pool arcade where there will be no consumption of alcohol because the venue is not a sports bar or anything equivalent,” said Nesh.
The prohibition of alcohol consumption at the contest comes at a time the game has widely been associated with drunkenness and immorality.
At the potentially exciting tournament the winner will go home US$500 richer, the first runner-up will pocket US$250 and the third best player of the tournament will receive US$150.
Bulawayo will be represented by Kamohelo Dube, Fisani Moyo, Hardlife Magocha, Stanley Marko, Aurthur Dube, Lindan Gumbo, Norman Chisuwa, Ronald Kazembe, Stanley Ngwenya and the veteran of many pool battles Steven Paswani, among others.
Meanwhile, re-opened city bar, The Legacy, is set to play host to a two-day singles invitational pool tournament meant to remember the late Peter Dziko- a renowned master of the billiards.
The contest will be played next Saturday and Sunday.
Dziko died in 2016 and he was influential in nurturing young pool players and in the formation of the Bulawayo Pool Association (BPA).
“His demise was a great loss to us as the Dziko family and the Bulawayo pool family. We were robbed of a great player, mentor and administrator. He was a humble man who nurtured a number of young pool players in the city.
As a family we wish to let his legacy grow hence the holding of the two-day pool tournament,” said Osbornewells Dziko, one of the late Peter’s sons.
