NATIONAL University of Science and Technology’s former Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Bubuya Masola, who died at his flat last Wednesday at the age of 69, will be buried today at the Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
In a statement issued yesterday, NUST’s director of Communication and Marketing, Mr Thabani Mpofu, said Prof Masola joined the institution in 2018 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine.
“It is with a heavy heart that the university announces the passing on of Prof Bubuya Masola, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. He was 69,” reads the statement.
“He joined NUST on February 5, 2018, as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine.”
Before joining the university, Prof Masola worked as a Clinical Biochemist at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare from January 1985 to March 1986. He then moved to the University of Zimbabwe where he worked as a lecturer from April 1986 to December 2005.
“From January 2006 to December 2015, Prof Masola worked as a senior lecturer at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. From January 2016 to January 2018, he was engaged as Honorary Senior Research Associate at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa before joining NUST on February 5, 2018,” said the university.
Prof Masola retired from the university service on December 31, 2020, and since the beginning of 2021, he has been on annual post-retirement contracts until the time of his death.
“On behalf of the council chairperson, Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mqhele Dlodlo, council, management, staff, students and alumni, we wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Masola family and friends. May the family, friends and NUST community find comfort in that the Lord gives and takes away at His own will (Psalm 139 vs 23-24).
“As the NUST community, we thank the family for the time spent with Prof Masola and the invaluable contribution he made in service to the university. May his dear soul rest in peace,” said the university.
The funeral service for Prof Masola will be at Amphitheatre starting at 8am before burial at Lady Stanley Cemetery.
