LOCAL companies Fossil Contracting and Geo Pomona Waste Management were some of the top winners at the Chartered Institute of Project Managers Zimbabwe (CIPMZ) awards held in Harare on Thursday.
Fossil Contracting scooped four prizes at the glittering ceremony, including the top honour in the Project Oriented Organisation of the Year category.
Mr Mcdonald Mhasho, an engineer with Fossil Contracting, was also named among the winners for the Project Engineer of the Year.
Mr Brighton Chidzvete, also of Fossil Contracting, was recognised among the Most Innovative Young Project Managers of the Year, while the company’s chief operating officer Mr Ronald Mashura was named one of the Project Focused Chief Operating Officers of the Year.
It was a triumvirate of gongs for Geo Pomona Waste Management, after the company scooped two awards, while its chief executive Mr Dilesh Nguwaya earned the top title of Focused CEO of the Year.
The company clinched the top spots in the Environmental Impact Project of the Year (Waste Management), and Project Team of the Year.
Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe emerged victorious in the Mining Project of the Year category, while Maka Resources scooped the Agriculture Project of the Year accolade.
The Overall Project of the Year award went to Dinson and Steel.
Other winners included Ecocash Holdings Zimbabwe, Mashwede Holdings, Khaya Cement, Bikita Minerals and Nakiso Borehole Drilling.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, guest of honour and managing director of Bindura Nickel Mine Mr Thomas Lusiyano described project managers as national assets.
“Projects transcend the length and breadth of our economic sectors from hospitality to health, transport, environment, water and sanitation. One good thing about project management is that it unites us from all corners of the economy.
“We recognise our project management professionals. These are national assets who continue to build our nation. They are heroes of our time, worker bees that pull Zimbabwe in the direction she wants.
“These are people who take up the responsibility upon themselves to build our country, in line with the President’s mantra Nyika ino- vakwa nevene vayo.”
Mr Lusiyano added: “The 2023 CIPMZ Zimbabwe Project Management Awards ceremony is coming right at the back of the 2024 National Budget.
“This is why I was delighted to learn that the theme of these awards ceremony is ‘Building Towards Attainment of Vision 2030, Brick by Brick, Stone by Stone’.
“The infrastructure cluster got an allocation of 10 trillion dollars in the just-announced national budget. This figure excludes other affiliate allocations and demonstrates that infrastructure is a tool for national development.”
