FOUNDERS High School will host the Bulawayo Chess Association (BCA) Candidates’ tournament set for tomorrow and Sunday.
The candidates’ tournament is a curtain raiser to the BCA Championships, and only the winner will join nine other players for the championships to be held at Eveline High School in two weeks’ time.
Thabo Elisha from Midlands State University, Ronald Chimanzi of Nust Chess Club and Valentine Nkoma of Nkulumane Chess Club are among the favourites at this weekend’s tournament.
Elisha first burst onto the Bulawayo chess scene by winning the Hillside Open in February 2013 and has been a regular at most local chess events.
Other players to watch include Tarcisio Chikandi, Hope Ndlovu, Moses Mutipforo and Eshward Mudhumo.
BCA director of ratings and arbitrations Dalithemba Ndlovu hoped the event will be competitive.
“It’s all about being the best in this tournament and the contenders are yet to show their skills and clever moves.
“At the end, there should be a checkmate to win the trophy. The players participating are the best and no doubt they’re going to make the weekend captivating,” said Ndlovu.
