Four artisanal miners die after mine shaft collapse

Four artisanal miners died after they were trapped in a disused mine in Shurugwi.

The mine shaft collapsed and trapped the artisanal miners.

National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the tragic incident that occurred on September 4, 2025.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a mine accident that occurred at Chengxi Gold Mine, Shurugwi, on September 4, 2025,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

“Four artisanal miners died after being trapped in a disused mine shaft that collapsed.”

He added that the victims were prospecting for gold at the time of the accident.

“The bodies of the victims have since been retrieved and taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for post-mortem .”
