Four chess players earn international rating

FOUR young chess players from Once Upon A Child Primary School have made their mark on the international stage by earning spots on the international chess rankings.

This remarkable achievement came after their participation in the Moja Chess Extravaganza 2025, held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The four players who achieved international ratings are Daryl Chanyeka, Phoebe Mutamiri, Enoch Mapiye, and Anesu Chitima.

They stood out among a strong contingent from their school, which had sent a team of 20 students to compete in the individual international competition.

Other team members who represented the school included Tadiwanashe Chineka, Ulritcht Kamasho, Ulrich Kamasho, Beloved Chadereka, Munesu Chitima, Lusanda Moyo, Miguel Chiweta, Austin Chipato, Vuyisile Dube, Muziwethu Halabangana, Robyn Chitumbura, Munashe Mangundu, Thamsanqa Moyo, Eli Mpofu, Mukudzeishe Maziriri, and Shawn Manzini.

Team coach Siza Ndlovu expressed great pride in the players’ accomplishments.

“It’s a rare feat for our country to have players getting onto the international chess ratings. We are very proud of what the team has done at this tournament. This is a big indication of how bright the future of the game is in our country,” said Ndlovu.

Team patron Sithokozile Tshuma also commended the young talents and appreciated the support from the parents.

“I am pleased with my chess players because I believe they played very well. Our school doesn’t only seek to excel in academics but also in sports, as we have done,” said Tshuma.

Once Upon a Child Primary School’s success at the Moja Chess Extravaganza highlights the school’s growing reputation for promoting both academic and extracurricular excellence.
