FOUR coaches are set to leave the country at the weekend to attend an International Handball Federation (IHF) Global Coaching Course in Qatar next week.
The four coaches are Allan Mandeya, Farai Gwisai, Sipho Mahlangu and Clemence Tauro. They will attend the course which is the highest coaching qualification in the sport from January 14 to 20.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation (ZHF) president, Amon Madzvamuse, said the four’s participation was due recognition by the IHF of the development work of the game in the country.
“Zimbabwe Handball Federation has received four air tickets for four of our coaches to go and attend the Global Coaching Course in Qatar. This is in recognition of the good work the ZHF has been doing in developing the sport in the country.
“We’re one of the few countries in Region 5 to have consistently competed in the sport where we’ve acquitted ourselves well in both the men and women’s versions of the sport,” he said.
Last year the country’s Under-20 boys and girls scooped bronze medals at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Challenge Trophy held in Zambia.
The country is ranked second in the region which comprises countries mainly in the Sadc.
Despite the in-roads made in the sport, funding challenges have hindered the development of the game.
Madzvamuse said they would this year run regional leagues to cut down on transport and other related costs.
