FOUR people died and 18 others were injured on Monday when their Toyota Hiace kombi veered off the road and overturned before landing on its right side at around 4pm.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident occurred at the 3km peg along Hamutyinei Road, Gweru.

“The bodies of the victims were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for post-mortem. 17 injured victims are admitted to the same hospital whilst another victim was referred to Bulawayo United Hospitals for treatment.

“More details to be released in due course,” said Comm Nyathi.

The accident is the third fatal kombi crash in the last fortnight.

On Friday last week at around 9.30am the 47km peg along 22 Miles–Mafararikwa Road, two people were killed while eight others were injured when another Toyota Hiace kombi, with no passengers on board, collided head on with a Mazda B2200 double cab vehicle, with eight passengers on board.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Hospital for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

Last week, five people died while nine others were injured when their kombi veered off the road and overturned near Sunway City turn at the 20km peg along the Harare-Mutare Highway.

The kombi driver, who was identified as Elisha Mandemo (34), lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, before landing on its roof.

The commuter omnibus was on its way to Marondera, with 18 passengers of board when the accident occurred.

Police reiterated that motorists should observe stipulated speed limits and abide by all road rules and regulations in-order to curb road traffic accidents.
