TWO men who allegedly robbed a shop in Beitbridge of more than $3,000 at gunpoint were apprehended by a mob after the pistol they used in the robbery ran out of ammunition.
The duo was part of a four-men gang that pounced on a shop in Garikayi suburb on Tuesday at around 7PM.
Never Mlambo was admitted to Beitbridge District Hospital for injuries he sustained after he was attacked by a mob before his arrest.
Mlambo was yesterday remanded in custody to May 11 from his hospital bed by Beitbridge magistrate Gloria Takundwa.
His other accomplice, whose name could not be established, is in police custody.
Acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland South province Sergeant Thabani Mkwanazi was not immediately available for comment yesterday.
However, a police source said two other members of the gang escaped with an unknown amount of money.
“We’re still pursuing the other two members of the group. At the moment one of the suspects who incurred serious head injuries from beating by members of the public is being treated at Beitbridge District Hospital under police guard,” said the police officer.
Witnesses yesterday said the four armed robbers pounced on the shop armed with a pistol.
A worker at the shop, Shelton Kani, said one of the robbers threatened him with a knife.
“One of them had a knife over my head while others searched for money in the tills.
“They took over $3,000 from our Ecocash till and an undisclosed amount from the shop’s daily takings.
“They then disappeared from the shop and ran towards the new suburb with Mlambo firing shots in the air. The gun ran out of ammunition and he was then attacked by a mob,” he said.
Kani said Mlambo and an accomplice were cornered by a mob while two others managed to escape.
