The Francophonie Week Film Festival came to life yesterday with the screening of the drama, “Nous Appartient” (“The World Belongs to Us”), courtesy of the Belgian Embassy at Old Mutual Theatre at Alliance Francaise in Harare.
There will be screenings at Alliance Francaise, the French Ambassador’s residence, Prince Edward and Gateway schools until March 22. A highlight of the week will be the “Sing Your Way to Paris” competition where participants select an original French song and perform it in front of an audience and adjudicators. Whoever wins will win an air ticket and an all-expenses-paid-for trip to the French capital.
“This year we opened the competition to anyone who can sing in French, as opposed to our previous only Zimbabwean nationality policy,” Sarudzai Sharon Chadokwenda, the co-ordinator, said.
She said registration for the competition closes on March 21 and is open to anyone between the ages of 14-26.
Ten entries will be selected to compete in the final to be held on March 21 at Alliance Francaise. Film lovers will be treated to a film festival on selected days of the Francophonie Week.
Screenings will start at 6.30pm at the Old Mutual Theatre at Alliance Francaise featuring French movies with English subtitles. The festival will have movies drawn from French-speaking countries.
Harare’s mbira princess Hope Masike will headline “Saturday Night Concert” at Alliance Francaise. Having toured many countries in Africa and Europe, she is sure to keep music lovers entertained with her fusion of mbira and folk.
Adding to the fun is a spelling competition and quiz aimed at encouraging young people to learn to speak French.
