Regional mining conglomerate Mwana Africa Plc, which owns Freda Rebecca, said the mine underwent a formal third party audit process by the internationally recognised accreditation and certification body, DQS, and successfully complied with the stringent requirements.
Mwana Africa chief executive officer Mr Kalaa Mpinga said the ISO certification is reflective of the mine’s high standards. “I am delighted with Freda Rebecca achieving ISO 14001 and OHAS 18001 certification.
“This achievement underlines Mwana’s commitment to maintaining high standards in health, safety and environmental matters,” he said.
ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that provides a framework for environmental management, measurement, evaluation and auditing to assist companies in minimising the negative impact of their operation on the environment, complying with applicable laws, regulations and other environmentally oriented requirements and striving for continuous and sustainable improvement.
OHAS 18001 is a standard for occupational health and safety management systems and it exists to assist businesses to implement rigorous measures to promote a safe and healthy working environment.
OHAS 18001 provides a framework that helps organisations to consistently identify and control health and safety risks.
It also seeks to reduce the potential for accidents in the workplace, improve legislative compliance and improve overall performance.
Freda Rebecca’s production increased by 19 percent during the first three months of this year.
The mine produced a total of 14 280 ounces of gold during the first quarter of the year.
