Free eye care for Magunje villagers

At least 200 villagers from Magunje last week received gifts of a lifetime after the Lions Club of Karoi and their counterparts in Harare invited doctors from abroad to offer free eye services to poor communities in the district.

Magunje Growth Point turned into a hive of activity as the elderly from as far Kajekache (Hurungwe West) and Chipapa (Hurungwe Central) used the earliest buses for the golden opportunity.

The programme brought hope for the elderly and the young alike, especially those who had spent several months or years suffering from poor eye sight.

“These glasses I am putting on are a source of renewed hope to my life,” a jubilant Mbuya Mazerenganwa of Chipapa said.

“My vision was all blurred and I want to thank Lions Club in the name of the Lord for the good job. I can now see properly like others.”

Ward 23 councillor, Cde Nixon Mandere Magaramombe said the Lions Club initiative was noble and an excellent way of remembering the plight of the disadvantaged.

“It is out of such benevolence that good eye health among our parents, siblings and children in our communities can be ensured,” he said.

“Most of the people in our rural communities cannot afford to cater for such health needs without assistance.”

The services offered by optician Dr Fyn Juncer and his team from Denmark included screening and dispensing eye and reading glasses.

On the day, a total of 204 people were attended to.

The programme targeted villagers who are financially marginalised.

Lions Club of Karoi is an affiliate of Lions Clubs International founded in 1917 in Chicago, United States.
