IN a bid to tap talent in rural areas, Friendly Academy and the Matengambiri Family Trust have partnered to scout and develop talent by hosting the second edition of the Mutengambiri Under-14 Soccer Tournament at Dambakupetwa Primary School in Nyanga on July 21. The tournament is aimed at recruiting young players who have potential to be roped in the Friendly Academy development program.
Sydney Matanhike, the tournament organising chairman, said the tournament is aimed at promoting education through sport whilst at the same time fighting drug abuse by empowering youths in remote communities.
“We are looking forward to hosting the second edition of the Matengambiri Soccer Under-14 Tournament where we are expecting three boys’ and three girls’ schools, which is an increase from last year when we had three boys’ schools.
“This year we are incorporating the girl child where we will select a single player from each team and the six players will be selected for scholarships,” said Matanhike.
Winners will get trophies and gold medals, with the runners-up and third-placed teams walking away with silver and bronze medals respectively.
“After the tournament we will have select teams for boys and girls which will have a tour to Harare where they will play friendly matches with Friendly Academy junior teams and tour several sporting facilities,” said Matanhike.
Last year, the boys select team had a chance to watch the Harare Derby between Dynamos and CAPS United at the National Sports Stadium.
