Tsenulo Moyo
WHEN passion meets talent, it manifests in the greatest manner. This was at play for a 28-year-old woman, Charity Moyo, from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo, who is an accountant by profession but a designer through passion.
Charity said she started fashion designing in 2020 and mainly works on dresses for young ladies, bridesmaids, and wedding dresses.
“I believe fashion designing was a passion, something hidden inside me for ages, which I rediscovered when I was grown up. I had actually taken a different path as I studied an accounting and finance degree instead of fashion. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I realised I had a desire for fashion. When I was growing up, I used to be a person who liked to draw, and I used to compete with my cousin to sew dresses for our dolls,” Moyo said.
Moyo said her aunt’s husband was a tailor, and her mother was also a skilled seamstress. She was even recognised by a tailor she approached with a design she had drawn. Impressed by her talent, the tailor offered to teach her how to sew.
Moyo would design her own clothes, particularly for Sundays. A friend who admired her designs helped her raise funds to buy a sewing machine.

“My target audience is young ladies,” she explained. “I want to help them express their personalities through fashion.”
Moyo also discussed the challenges she has faced in the fashion industry. These include intense competition, maintaining originality while adapting to changing trends, and the high cost of keeping up with social media trends.
Despite these challenges, she has received support from her friends and church community.
Her designs are inspired by her current feelings and emotions. Her latest collection features bridesmaid dresses.
“I would urge other young aspiring fashion designers to believe in their vision, stay focused, and avoid following the crowd. It’s important to stay informed about industry trends, network with fellow designers, and build a strong online presence.
Diversifying designs, remaining innovative and creative, and learning from failures to improve are also crucial steps.”
She said her plans include establishing a strong national and international presence.
“I would also love to empower young aspiring fashion designers and local talent, encouraging them to believe in their abilities. I aim to showcase Zimbabwean culture to the world through fashion,” she said.
