IN just SEVEN years, Tavengwa Mukuhlani has transformed himself from an outcast, who was suspended by the Sports Commission, to the second most powerful man in world cricket.
In June 2019, Mukuhlani appeared on his way out of sports administration, in humiliating fashion, after he was suspended by the SRC for a number of reasons.
His entire Zimbabwe Cricket board, including Managing Director Givemore Makoni, were also suspended before the suspension was lifted.
Now, just seven years down the line, Mukuhlani is now the deputy chairman of the International Cricket Council.
He becomes the first Zimbabwean to hold the position and succeeds Imran Khwaja, who has stepped down from the ICC Board.
Mukuhlani, who also chairs the Africa Cricket Association and represents ZC on the ICC Board, currently serves on the ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee and the Nominations Committee and chairs the HR and Remuneration Committee.
His appointment comes at a significant time for Zimbabwe and African cricket, with the country preparing to co-host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 alongside South Africa and Namibia.
Mukuhlani’s leadership experience at ZC and understanding of the region will bring valuable insight as the ICC and its members prepare to deliver a landmark World Cup that will return the tournament to Africa after 24 years and support the continued growth of cricket across the continent.
