From beerhall to supermarket- the story of Kariba’s most popular beerhall

Kariba Municipality is set to dispose of the popular Nyamhunga Beerhall to a retail chain which intends to build a state-of-the-art supermarket.

The proposal has been put to residents for their input, in a development which is set to transform the tourism town.

Kariba has two major retail stores with one of them seeking to move to a more spacious and modern location, complete with a parking lot.

In exchange, the retail chain is expected to build a poly clinic in BaTonga Township.

Mayor George Masendu confirmed the development saying consultations with residents have been made and authorities are now going through feedback to find the dominant view.

“As a local authority, we have proposed to trade off Nyamhunga Beerhall so that it can be re-modelled into a supermarket,” said Mayor Masendu.

“In exchange, Pick N Pay will build a poly clinic in BaTonga suburb to decongest Nyamhunga Clinic which is overwhelmed by large numbers of people as the population is growing rapidly.”

Beerhalls, he said, were no longer profitable and most local authorities were disposing of them or converting them to other uses.

Council is currently leasing out its beerhalls where tenants were reportedly paying as little as $1000 per month.

Some residents are against the development saying council should not dispose of amenities that are serving the community.

Others were of the view that the beerhall should be disposed through an open system where the highest bidder wins so that council and residents would get fair value.
