THE name Gokwe often stirs curiosity in Zimbabwe.
For many, the area has long been associated with mystery, folklore and stories that have travelled far beyond its dusty roads and cotton fields.
Yet from this same land known for its mystique, a different story is emerging — one carried not in whispers but in song.
It is the story of Emmanuel Sibanda, a young gospel musician determined to turn faith into melody and hope into music.
Born on March 14, 1997, Sibanda’s very name carries deep meaning. Emmanuel — a biblical name that means “God with us” — is no coincidence for the rising artist whose life is anchored in gospel music.
Like the message embedded in his name, Sibanda believes his journey is guided by a higher purpose.
Raised in a humble household as the firstborn in a family of five, Sibanda’s early life revolved around church services, family gatherings and the rhythms of rural life.
In many Zimbabwean communities, church is more than a place of worship — it is also where young talent often first finds expression.
For Sibanda, it was there that his voice began to grow. Week after week, surrounded by congregants singing hymns of praise, he slowly discovered that music could be both a ministry and a calling.
As he grew older, his musical inspirations became clearer. Among the artists who shaped his passion for gospel music are celebrated Zimbabwean musicians such as Munyaradzi Munodawafa and Blessing Shumba.
Munodawafa’s commanding vocals and mastery of the keyboard particularly left a lasting mark on the young artist.
Inspired by these gospel giants, Sibanda has begun crafting a sound that blends traditional Zimbabwean rhythms with contemporary gospel arrangements.
The result is a soulful style that reflects both the heritage of rural Zimbabwe and the evolving sound of modern gospel music.
But for Sibanda, music is not simply about performance.
“My mission is to spread hope and faith through music. Many people are going through challenges, and sometimes a song can bring encouragement when words alone cannot,” he said.
His upcoming single titled Mubvunzo, featuring fellow musician Daniel Magara, marks another step in his musical journey.
The track is expected to introduce listeners in April to the themes and sound that will define his debut album — a project he says will carry messages of reflection, faith and perseverance.
Beyond recording and releasing music, Sibanda is also eager to collaborate with other gospel musicians as he continues building his career.
He believes unity among artists strengthens the gospel message and helps reach wider audiences.
From a district often spoken about in tones of mystery to the growing stage of Zimbabwe’s gospel music scene, Sibanda’s story is one of transformation.
And as his voice begins to travel beyond the boundaries of his hometown, the young singer hopes that the message carried in his name — Emmanuel — will resonate with listeners everywhere: that God is indeed with us.
