A dealer appeared in court yesterday for allegedly duping a client of 25 000 litres of diesel worth US$36 500, which he failed to deliver.

Tinashe Nyasha Makoni appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi charged with fraud. He was granted US$300 bail and was remanded to January 11 next year.

The State represented by Mr Thomas Chanakira alleged that on January 26 this year, the complainant saw a message in a WhatsApp group advertising fuel for sale.

He got interested and wanted to buy 25 000 litres of diesel for his client, Mr Raymond Mazodze.

Makoni indicated that he could supply the order and instructed the complainant to give him the truck details. The complainant  ordered 25 000 litres and was charged US$36 500.

He made the payment to Makoni and was issued with a document which was said to be the release document for the fuel in question.

The complainant sent the document to his client so that he would collect the fuel from the National Oil Infrastructure Company.

When the client went to collect the fuel, he was advised that the release document was fake.

Efforts to locate Makoni since then were fruitless until he was arrested recently by police in connection with the case.
