Fun facts…Bulawayo’s shocking secret — electric street light before London

Sikhumbuzo Moyo, [email protected]

WELCOME to our inaugural edition of “Fun Facts of Life,” where we’ll embark on a journey to explore surprising trivia and fascinating phenomena. Today, we set our sights on our Zimbabwe, a nation brimming with rich history and unexpected quirks. Buckle up, because we are about to delve into some facts that might just leave you scratching your head!

Bulawayo

Our expedition begins in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city. Here, we discover proof of the nation’s pioneering spirit. Believe it or not, Bulawayo boasted electric street lights illuminating its avenues as early as 1897! This innovative feat becomes even more impressive when compared to London, a major global metropolis, which was still reliant on gas lamps at the time.

Bulawayo’s forward-thinking approach extended to its urban design. When Dr Leander Starr Jameson, a key figure in colonial Rhodesia oversaw the city’s layout, he ensured the roads were extravagantly wide. But why such spaciousness? The answer lies in practicality!

Dr Jameson envisioned roads that could comfortably accommodate a wagon pulled by a team of 16 oxen — a testament to his vision for a city prepared for future growth and diverse transportation needs.

Official languages

Zimbabwe’s rich cultural landscape extends beyond its historical anecdotes. Did you know that this nation once held the Guinness World Record for the most official languages spoken within its borders? This impressive feat speaks volumes about Zimbabwe’s cultural diversity.

The list of official languages includes Chewa, Chibarwe, Kalanga and many more, alongside English and Sign Language. This linguistic richness fosters a vibrant cultural exchange and underscores the importance of inclusivity in Zimbabwean society.
One remarkable marvel not to be missed is Lake Kariba, a man-made wonder that holds the title of the world’s largest lake and reservoir by volume.

This breathtaking expanse of water rests approximately 1 300 kilometres upstream from the Indian Ocean, serving as a vital source of hydroelectric power and a haven for diverse aquatic life.

Exploring the realm of science
While our initial focus has been on Zimbabwe, the world of fun facts extends far beyond national boundaries. Prepare to have your mind blown by some captivating scientific phenomena!

Cloud city

Imagine a colossal cotton ball weighing a staggering million tonnes! That’s roughly the weight of a typical cloud, thanks to its immense volume and surprisingly low density.

Twin trouble
Identical twins share an uncanny resemblance, but their fingerprints tell a different story. These unique markings are influenced by development in the womb, ensuring each individual possesses a distinct fingerprint identity.

Time warps in nature
Have you ever felt like time seems to move at different speeds? Well, turns out, there’s some truth to that feeling! The perception of time is linked to how our brains process information. For instance, a salamander experiences time at a slower pace compared to a human.

Signature says it all
A study conducted in 2016 suggests a potential link between signature size and personality traits. The study indicates that larger signatures in men might be associated with social confidence, while women with bigger signatures could exhibit narcissistic tendencies. However, it’s important to note that further research is needed to solidify this connection.

Straight? Not quite
Our world may appear visually perfect, but a closer look reveals a hidden truth — imperfections exist everywhere! Even a laser beam, known for its precision, exhibits a slight curve when examined under extreme magnification.

Dreaming in signs
Sign language isn’t just a mode of communication for the waking world. A fascinating case study documented a deaf man using sign language in his sleep, offering a unique glimpse into the realm of dreams and the power of subconscious communication.

Herbal claims (debunked)
Be wary of unverified internet remedies! A user suggested consuming dried pawpaw seeds for male sterility. This claim lacks scientific backing and could potentially pose health risks. Always consult a medical professional before resorting to unproven treatments.

We hope you have enjoyed this delightful exploration of fun facts! Join us on our next adventure as we delve deeper into the fascinating world around us.
