BANJUL. — Gambian police seized cocaine and cannabis sativa with a market value of US$2 million, the West African country’s anti-drug agency said on Sunday night.
Modou Jobe of the National Drug Enforcement Agency said the seizure is a significant move of the narcotic officers, after a raid in Banjul and Brikama of the West Coast Region. On Sunday, officers in both the greater Banjul region and the provincial Town of Brikama embarked on a mass crackdown and arrested five dealers ages 20 to 61.
“Police have embarked on the massive crackdown on drug dealers in both regions by the special operation unit and the officers attached to Brikama and Serrekunda,” he said, adding at least 200 kilogrammes of cannabis and cocaine were seized with suspects taken in police custody. The suspects are facing charges of drug trafficking at the court.
Drug trafficking in Gambia has declined in recent years due to intensified crackdown. In 2010, the Gambian National Drug Enforcement Agency in collaboration with the British police seized tonnes of cocaine worth billions of dollars at Bonto Village in the suburbs of Brikama, 50 km away from the capital Banjul. — Xinhua.
