THE wait is over.

Bulawayo ready to ball today.

The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) National Club Championships tip off this afternoon at Khanyisile Sports Centre, launching a three-day basketball storm in the City of Kings.

And former BUZ president Joe Mujuru expects nothing short of a hoops blockbuster.

Fast breaks. Slam dunks. Big steals. Last-second daggers.

Zimbabwe’s top clubs are in Bulawayo. And the battle for national supremacy starts now.

The country’s best men’s and women’s teams will hit the floor today in what promises to be a fierce hardwood war, with provincial pride, silverware and bragging rights all on the line.

Mujuru says the national championships remain Zimbabwe basketball’s biggest proving ground.

“Today is the day the talking stops and the real action begins. Whenever the country’s best clubs come together, you expect serious competition because every team wants to prove they are the top force in Zimbabwe,” said Mujuru.

“This tournament has always been special because it brings out the best in players, coaches and fans. Bulawayo loves basketball, so I am expecting a fantastic atmosphere and top-quality competition from the opening tip.”

With today being Workers’ Day, Khanyisile is expected to come alive as basketball lovers from across the country pack the venue for what could be an explosive opening day.

Mujuru believes Bulawayo’s passionate hoops culture will make a huge difference.

“The city understands basketball and always creates an exciting environment. Home fans can lift the energy even higher, and that is what makes tournaments like these memorable,” he said.

For Bulawayo teams Mavericks and Lakers, today marks the start of a massive home-court mission.

With local pride at stake, both sides will be desperate to feed off the crowd and make early statements.

But the road will not be easy.

Defending men’s champions Basket Hounds arrive with targets on their backs and championship confidence, while rivals from across Zimbabwe are ready to press hard and crush their repeat dreams.

The women’s division also promises serious heat.

UZ Sparks bring pedigree and title ambition, but home side Lakers Mzansi will be determined to own the paint and protect Bulawayo’s backyard.

Mujuru says beyond the trophies, the tournament is a celebration of Zimbabwean basketball’s rise.

“These championships are important because they inspire the next generation and showcase how much talent we have in Zimbabwe.

This is where players step up, where clubs build legacy and where basketball continues to grow,” he said.

For the next three days, Khanyisile becomes Zimbabwe’s basketball battleground.

Every pass matters. Every rebound counts. Every quarter is war.
