CHICKEN INN sense an opportunity this weekend — and they are determined to seize it. Their final Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match of the season, a high-stakes Bulawayo derby against Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium, is expected to draw a full house. With both teams locked on 38 points and separated only by goal difference, the club has adjusted gate charges to capitalise on what could be their biggest crowd of the year.
The Gamecocks say the decision is rooted in basic economics, citing the high operational costs of hosting a club of Highlanders’ stature. Bosso command one of the largest followings in the country, and Chicken Inn argue that the numbers justify the increase.
“Highlanders contribute 40 percent of the PSL’s revenue and have a big fan base,” said Chicken Inn spokesperson Nkululeko Nkala. “It’s necessary to recoup some of the league’s expenses, especially when playing a high-value team like Highlanders. It’s nothing new. Highlanders themselves have raised gate charges four times this season. Unless, of course, some animals are more equal than others.”
The cheapest ticket has been pegged at US$5. Fans on the wings will pay US$10, while the VIP section will cost US$20.
Sunday’s clash has already set the city buzzing. It closes a season in which Scottland FC, in their debut campaign, tore through the league and wrapped up the title with a game to spare. They will be crowned champions on Saturday after their match against TelOne at Ascot Stadium in Gweru.
The final weekend will, however, proceed without six players who are suspended after accumulating three yellow cards. Those ruled out are Tatenda Mutyambizi (MWOS), Kelvin Mangiza (CAPS United), Munashe Bamala (Triangle United), Shepherd Mhlanga (FC Platinum), Marvelous Chigumira (Scottland FC) and Never Rauzhi (Highlanders). — @FungaiMuderere
