A MZILIKAZI man claimed he smoked ganja to cope with stress from hearing that his mother had been admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital.
If you think police were understanding after hearing his heart-rending tale, you do not know Bulawayo’s serious guardians of the peace.
Quicker than a flash, they hauled Biezel Mudimu to holding cells. He pleaded guilty to dagga possession before Bulawayo Magistrate Patience Madondo. Mudimu was remanded in custody until 5 December.
Prosecutor Joseph Rugara said the arrest occurred on 2 December around 1AM at the corner of Leopold Takawira Avenue and Lobengula Street. Police on patrol stopped Mudimu, searched him and found three sachets of dagga tucked in his pocket. He was taken to the station and handed over to CID Drugs and Narcotics.
Later that day the dagga was taken to Zimpost where it was weighed in his presence and clocked in at five grammes. Mudimu told the court he turned to the herb to handle the stress of his mother’s illness.
In another case, a Rangemore man Thembinkosi Ndlovu (21) was also nabbed for dagga possession and said he used it to deal with over-thinking and peer pressure. Just like they did with Mudimu, the no-nonsense cops carried out Zimbabwe’s anti-drug crusade without fear or favour.
Ndlovu appeared before the same magistrate and was also remanded in custody until 5 December. He pleaded guilty.
Rugara said Ndlovu was arrested on December 2 around 3AM at the corner of Leopold Takawira and Jason Moyo after police searched him and found one sachet of dagga in his right trouser pocket. He too was taken to the station and handed to CID Drugs and Narcotics.
The dagga was weighed at Zimpost and came out at two grams. Ndlovu told the court he used it to distract his mind and calm down from peer pressure.
