A Harare gardener has been brought before the Harare Civil Court by his estranged wife for failing to fend for his child. Washington Dube allegedly neglected his child following his separation from Idah Kachepa.

Kachepa, who was demanding $150 for the upkeep of their child, told magistrate Mrs Barbra Mateko that Dube was a gardener who earned $250 a month and could afford to pay.

“I want $150 for the child because he has never provided anything for the child ever since birth,” she said.

“The money will cater for the child’s basic needs among them food, nursery school fees and clothing. He is a gardener and earns $250,” added Kachepa.

Dube offered $25 and denied earning the $250 alleged by Kachepa.

He told the court that he had not refused to pay maintenance but wanted to pay an amount he could afford.

“I can afford to pay her $25 because I earn $100 and I am married to another woman who also needs my support,” Dube said.

“The money she is demanding is too much and more than my salary, so I do not want to be arrested for default after failing to pay the money she is demanding,” he said.

Kachepa disputed Dube’s salary and told the court that she would bring proof of his earnings since she once worked as a maid at the same residence as her ex-hubby.

Mrs Mateko ordered Kachepa to bring proof of Dube’s earnings.
