CHAOS erupted at the Road Motor Service (RMS) depot along Khami Road this afternoon when a gas explosion sent a welder flying onto the roof of a shade he was working under.

The injured man was immediately rescued by the Bulawayo Fire Brigade in a dramatic operation that had onlookers holding their breath. Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo said the explosion was powerful and left the welder badly hurt, requiring urgent medical attention.

“The Bulawayo Fire Brigade responded swiftly, stabilising the victim on site before rushing him to MPILO Central Hospital for further treatment,” Moyo told B-Metro.

He added that the exact cause of the blast is still unclear but preliminary reports suggest it happened while the welder was working on a tank. Authorities are investigating the incident.

Neighbours said they heard a deafening bang that shook nearby buildings and sent clouds of smoke into the air, leaving the area in shock.

The injured man’s condition is unknown as investigations continue.

B-Metro will bring updates as the story develops
