Gatooma opening new residential area to cope with expansion

The Rhodesia Herald, January 6, 1969

A LARGE new residential area is to be established by the Gatooma Municipality about one mile from the town centre to cope with demand for residential stands.

This need has been caused by increasing commercial and industrial development in the town, the Town Clerk, Mr J. Howard said recently.

Mr J. Howard, said there were only 16 surveyed domestic stands left for sale in Gatooma and these were selling fast. He is confident the new area will provide all the town’s residential requirements for the next 20 years.

The area is a part of the commonage which has until now been used as a rifle range and which overlooks the Gatooma golf course. The rifle range and will be established elsewhere.

Mr Howard said the Municipality hoped to be able to offer members of the public stands of three-quarters of an acre “to give sufficient room for swimming pools and visitors’ cottages, which the conventional plots are too small for.”

He said another reason for the large size was to avoid the necessity of laying a waterborne sewerage system.

“Large plots would easily take the septic-type sewerage tanks which will probably be used,” said Mr Howard.

He hoped to have the first 100 acres surveyed and the papers ready for sale within the next two months. As more stands are needed after this, they will be surveyed off.

The plots are likely to cost about £400 each, said Mr Howard.
