THE Gatsheniville extravaganza burst into life in Lupane, with six secondary and two primary schools competing for honours in a three-day sporting tournament on Friday.
The event ends on Saturday.
The tournament, sponsored by Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Million Ndlovu is being held at his rural home and is part of his social responsibility initiative aimed at appreciating and engaging with the community while creating opportunities for young people to showcase their sporting talent.
It is also part of efforts to help fight drug and substance abuse.
The tournament got off to a high-octane start and has attracted scores of people from Lupane and surrounding areas as the competition continues up to Saturday.
The competition features football and netball, with six secondary schools St Paul’s, Mabhikwa, Ngubo, Pupu, Jiba Jiba and Mthuphane battling for honours.
Two primary schools are also taking part in the competition, giving younger learners an opportunity to showcase their sporting talent and compete against their peers.
The tournament, which has been approved by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, is expected to become competitive as the schools battle for the coveted gold medals in the different sporting disciplines.
Beyond the sporting contest, the event is providing young people with an opportunity to develop their talents, interact and build relationships through sport.
The extravaganza is also expected to draw supporters and community members from Lupane and beyond, with the tournament set to culminate in the finals and prizegiving ceremony on Saturday.
