adminWorld Vision Zimbabwe stepped up its advocacy work last week as it took the gender based violence awareness campaign to Bindura.Led by World Vision Zimbabwe National Gender and Advocacy co-ordinator Mrs Madrine Chiku; pastors, police officers, lecturers and legal practitioners took part in the programmes hosted at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) and the Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU).
Topics included HIV and Aids, forms of gender based violence and laws that provide for punishment of gender based violence perpetrators.
The Dean of Student Affairs at BUSE, Mr Retias Makado said such programmes mould good character in students.
“These programs are significantly important as they mould highly acclaimed students. The world is now demanding talent, skill and character. You can’t produce well-groomed students if they have no knowledge on gender based violence,” he said.
A BUSE student, Ms Tendai Bepe commended World Vision for providing such a platform.
“I was not really aware of all the forms of gender based violence but I now realise that the common form prevelant is verbal, girls fall victim to that.
“Girls also go through sexual harassment when they get caught up in the pushing and shoving when getting into buses. We need platforms to report such issues,” she said.
World Vision has been operating in Zimbawe since 1973. It focuses on community development, humanitarian affairs and advocacy programmes.
