MINISTER of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa has commended Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Limited for doing a great job in clearing illegal dumpsites in Harare.
Speaking at the national clean-up day at Chigovanyika Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza, Sen Tawengwa said such partnerships were needed to keep the province clean.
“Waste management issues are the responsibility of local authorities who play a major role in waste management service delivery,” he said.
“I would like to remind local authorities in Harare Metropolitan Province to be more accountable for their service delivery to residents and to also rope in strategic partners who can assist in the sustainable management of waste.
“In Harare city, Geo Pomona came on board and is doing a splendid job in clearing illegal waste dumpsites in residential areas.”
Sen Tawengwa said the active involvement and participation of all stakeholders in waste reduction, recovery and separation was key to sustainable waste management.
“To that end, I am calling upon companies and other organisations in Harare Metropolitan Province to come forward and assist in beefing up waste receptacles in the area of their choice,” he said. “Our national Constitution emphasises the right for every citizen to access a healthy environment that is not harmful to health. To achieve this, we all need to put our hands together like what we did today at this business centre during this cleaning exercise.”
Sen Tawengwa urged all vendors and shop owners to regularly clean Chigovanyika Shopping Centre and desist from dumping litter in stormwater drains.
