YOUNG Africa Zimbabwe has joined hands with Mr Pace Athletics Club to host the inaugural Ghetto Run in Chitungwiza on October 7.

The technical institution celebrating 25 years of existence, launched the event yesterday in the dormitory town.

The unique 25km, 12,5km and five km fun runs come in to complement Young Africa’s other social events which they regularly host, like field and indoors sports and arts festivals.

Speaking at the launch, Young Africa Zimbabwe country director Susan Madondo said they were happy to be involved with athletics. They hope to make the race an annual event.

“We are very glad as Young Africa to be hosting the first edition of the marathon and we are happy to be partnering with Mr Pace Athletics Club, Patsime Water and Generation Health.

“The initiative is to promote healthy living within the society especially in the high density areas where youths are being affected by drug and alcohol abuse.

“We are hopeful that this is going to be an annual event as we seek to give back to the community. We started here in Chitungwiza and we have another branch in Epworth so we saw it good to take athletics to the high density suburb as a way of appreciating,” said Madondo.

Mr Pace representative Collin Makaza said they are happy to bring athletics to Chitungwiza where his club is based and is hopeful that they get an overwhelming response.

“I am happy to have this unique marathon and it is going to go a long way in identifying talent as well as help youths abstain from drugs.

There is a lot of talent in the high density areas but some go unnoticed because of lack of exposure and we are trying to bridge the gap,’ said Makaza.
