A 94-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly raped his granddaughter (13) for close to four years resulting in her falling pregnant appeared in court.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, has been staying with her since she was eight years old.
A court heard he would leave his wife snoring in bed in the middle of the night and creep to the child’s bedroom to sexually abuse her.
He appeared at Inyathi Magistrates’ courts on Thursday last week before Resident Magistrate Urgent Vundla facing rape charges and was not asked to plead.
The old man spoke only to confirm his name and the charges he was facing.
He was remanded in custody until 20 February and he would be appearing at Bulawayo regional court for commencement of trial.
Allegations against the man are that on a date not known by the prosecutor but from January 2020 the man would wake up during the night and tiptoe to the minor’s bedroom.
It is said he would fondle the minor’s breast and private parts before sexually attacking her.
When he returned to the bedroom in the middle of the night he would tell his wife that he had been in the toilet.
After carrying out the sickening attack, the court heard, he would buy her silence by giving her money and at times sweets.
The minor kept the ordeal to herself but she could not hide it anymore when her tummy began to bulge, raising her granny’s eyebrows.
Worried about her granddaughter’s condition, the elderly woman quizzed her.
Seeing that there was no way out, the minor dropped the bombshell, revealing that her grandfather impregnated her and started sexually attacking her sometime in January 2020 until November 2023.
The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
