THE eight-year-old girl from Bindura who was at a safe house after it was discovered that she was pregnant, has given birth to a baby girl following a successful Caesarean section at Bindura Hospital.

Bindura Hospital public relations officer Sister Sitembile Mutsvairo said the baby was delivered at around 8.55am yesterday and both the mother and baby are in good condition.

Specialist nurses and gynaecologists were assigned to the minor when her pregnancy was discovered at six months.

“The C-section was successful there are no complications. She will be at the hospital for a few days as she recovers and afterwards the social welfare department will take over,” she said.

The social welfare department remain mum, but sources close to the case said there is a likelihood of separation of mother and child since the minor was not made aware of her situation due to her age.

The minor who was in grade three was allegedly raped by two 17-year-old brothers of the same area and they are denying the allegations.

Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Dr Sithembiso Nyoni who visited the girl last year hinted a possibility of DNA tests to determine if either of the boys is the father.

The Minister assured the family that she will work with them to reintegrate the minor back into school and help her mother to start a business.

The case came to light after the headmaster at Kambira Primary School noticed a bulging stomach.

The minor’s mother believed the changes were due to illness and she took her to prophets since she entered into early puberty, known as precocious puberty.

After the pregnancy was discovered at six month, the social welfare department immediately took her to a safe house.

Last year in November, a nine-year girl from Tsholotsho gave birth to a bay boy at United Bulawayo Hospital through caesarean section.
