It was glitz and glamour last weekend at Mother Touch High School in Tynward South as the school hosted its prize giving day. The prize giving day ran under the theme, “Excellence” which also coincided with the school motto, saw girls dominating in the prizes galore.
Girls outshined the boys as most of them walked away with best academic prizes and sports as well.

The day began with a procession of students, teachers, parents and invited guests before the school choir led everyone in singing the national anthem.

Describing the order of the day, it would be naïve to ignore entertainment provided by students as it proved that there is a lot of talent lying idle in schools that needs exposure.

The Mother Touch junior school mbira group put up a well polished act despite having practised for only five days.

The group managed to give the audience the vibrant melody as everyone stood, danced and sang along to songs like “Jesu Wakanaka” and “Taropafadzwa” among others. On to some laughter and fun, the drama club left everyone in stitches with their play based on women empowerment.

If it were the Oscars, definitely the drama club could have walked away with the ‘Best direction in Cinematology’ as their play was well choreographed.

Not to be left out were the poems, speech, music and drama.

One student, Mcdonald Gadzikwa reminded everyone the importance of environment as he recited his poem on conserving the environment.

Prize winners walked away with books, medals, trophies, shields and certificates.

Students who spoke to CLS said the event will go a long way in developing their academic excellence. They said the prize giving day will also motivate them to work harder. Four time award winner Masline Madambo (16) said was happy to walk away richer with lots of prizes.

The CEO’s award which everyone anticipated went to Rufaro Ndagurwa who could not hide his tears of joy after his name was called. According to Rufaro’s biography, he is calm, intelligent, humble and selfless when it comes to his work.

Rufaro walked away with a floating shield, books and prize money.

“When I received the overall best prize I was so excited and humbled. The jovial mood went beyond my emotions because I was not expecting that kind of recognition by my school,” he said.
