THE opening round of the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa) Townshend and Butcher tournament got underway at the Barbourfields Stadium outside grounds with 10 teams taking part.
A total of 18 goals were scored, with United FC, Madamara, Mpilo, Golden Hotspurs and Anolle Casting advancing to the next round.
Golden Hotspurs were the biggest winners on the day, firing four goals past Vipers as they wrapped up a 4-2 win.
Townshend and Butcher Trophy defending champions and current log leaders Safeguard got a first round bye and will be thrown into the hat for the quarter-final draw.
Bafa vice-chairman Charles Chunda hailed the level of competition at this year’s competition.
“The first round has gone well, the teams played well and the level of competition seems to have gone up. We would like to congratulate those that made it to the next round of the competition. We hope to stage quarter-final matches this weekend,” said Chunda.
The quarter-final draw will be held on Thursday at Townshend and Butcher in the city centre.
This year’s tournament marks the 60th anniversary partnership between Bafa and Townshed and Butcher, making it the country’s oldest football tournament.
