A goat meat start-up, Goat Goolash, made waves with its innovative cuisines at the inaugural Food Festival Zimbabwe held at the First Capital Bank Sports Club in Harare over the weekend.

Those who attended the festival were mesmerised by the range of culinary offerings that were presented by the goat meat start-up, including, goat biltong, kebabs, rolled goat insides, goat hamburgers, and burritos amongst others.

This culminated in the culinary start-up being recognised as one of the outstanding exhibitors at the event.

Goat Goolash founder and chief executive Masimba Biriwasha said goat meat is not appreciated.

“Goat meat has largely been sidelined in Zimbabwe despite it being an alternative source of healthy protein,” he said.

“Ironically, it is difficult to find a Zimbabwean who has not had an experience with goat meat yet it is missing from the food system.

“We are on a mission to change that narrative through working with our rural-based farmers and facilitating the movement of goats from the farmer to the plate while delivering world-class cuisines to consumers.”

Festival goers had an opportunity to sample some of the cuisines that were on offer including the Masau sauce which was a major hit.
Biriwasha said his company is focused on value addition.

“Young people need to be shown that goat meat is not only a healthy alternative but can be a culinary delight just like chicken, pork or beef,” he said.

“Our main focus is on value addition. Through value addition, we are bringing something new to the marketplace and at the same time, creating new opportunities for farmers to earn better incomes from goat production.

“Value addition is the cog in the wheel that will make it worthwhile for more farmers to invest in goat production.

“At the same time, presenting new and innovative cuisines is key to generating customer interest.”
