Goblins unleash reign of terror on teachers

The school, which has about 350 pupils and 15 teachers, is situated along Sipepa Road, 15km from Tsholotsho business centre.

Some teachers who spoke on condition of anonymity on Friday said the goblins were physically attacking and sexually abusing them.

“This problem started last term and became very serious in the past few weeks. The goblins would caress teachers’ private parts and strangle those who refuse,” said one of the teachers.

“Some times a female teacher would wake up in the morning only to discover that she had been intimate unknowingly.

“The goblins would also come to your room and knock, while calling your name and then demand money. We are in a difficult situation and do not know what to do.”

The teachers said the parents in the area have engaged inyangas from South Africa to try and exorcise the strange creatures.

“The villagers in the area have engaged South Africa inyangas who came here on Wednesday night.

“The parents contributed $1 each to finance the logistics for the cleansing ceremony,” said the teacher.

“At least 13 vehicles with about 50 people came all the way from South Africa. The delegation was joined by hundreds of local church members and villagers who participated in the service.

“We spent Wednesday night on our feet as the churches conducted the cleansing ceremony, which ended on Thursday mid-morning.

“We did not do any lessons because of that issue. After the service the delegation left the school.”

The teachers said it was suspected that the goblins belonged to some local leaders who reportedly boycotted the cleansing ceremony.

They said the inyangas told them that the goblins came to the school because they were aggrieved after their owners failed to control them.

Matabeleland North provincial education director Mrs Boithatelo Mnguni confirmed the incident.

“Yes we are aware of the issue and a report was made in our offices.

“We, however, urge teachers not to be involved in these issues. They should let the community solve such issues,” she said.

Mrs Mnguni expressed concern over the increase in cases of goblins causing problems at schools and said the development was disturbing the children’s learning.
