ZIMdancehall sensation Killer T is humbled by his incredible journey from modest beginnings to a celebrated youth icon.
Now in his mid-30s, the Mbare-bred chanter — real name Kelvin Kusikwenyu — has gained national recognition, transcending his ghetto roots to become a household name across Zimbabwe. As a chart-topping artiste and renowned philanthropist, Killer T has dedicated himself to uplifting the Mbare community in Harare, particularly through his Killer T Foundation, which empowers elderly women and widows.
The Zimdancehall Chairman, as the chanter is fondly known, is set to make a grand return to his neighbourhood tomorrow for the annual “Back To My Roots Concert” at Stodart Netball Complex in Mbare. With excitement for the concert reaching fever pitch, Killer T views this event as more than just a performance; it symbolises his evolution from 2010 to present.
Unlike previous Zimdancehall events held in the ghetto, Killer T promises to change the narrative by enhancing logistics, improving sound quality and crowd management.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Killer T expressed his disbelief at becoming a superstar, emphasising that he initially sang for fun.
“Miracles do happen in life, and I can’t believe God has written my story in golden letters,” he remarked.
“When I announced my arrival in 2010 with the track ‘Ndakarova Gunners’, many believed it was a fluke. I was just singing for fun, hoping to earn some money for clothes and food, unaware that God had other plans for me. This is the true script of my life as a musician.”
He noted that being recognised as a youth icon is a significant achievement for him. With all eyes on the upcoming concert, Killer T reiterated that the event celebrates life and honours the legends of Mbare who laid the foundation for his success.
“I know a lot of hype has been created, but for me and my team, this is a time to reflect on what we have gained from the ghetto. We are taking stock of our achievements and the impact we’ve made in the community as a way of giving back.”
He expressed his deep commitment to social responsibility, stating, “Fame without changing other people’s lives is vanity, as the elders say. My heart bleeds for the poorest widows of Mbare, and I am here to make them happy through my Killer T Foundation, funded by proceeds from shows like the Back To My Roots Concert on May 17.”
Entertainment-wise, the line-up of performers is dominated by household names ready to carry the day with aplomb.
Fellow Mbare-bred chanters — Seh Calaz, Kinnah and Madzimai I-Candy — have been included in the line-up.
Zimbabwe’s most sought-after hype man, DJ Fantan — also from Mbare — will be coming along with his entire team: DJ Levels, Ribhe, and Ndunge Yut. Fellow chanters Khonahale, Delroy Shewe, Hwinza, Poptain and Empress Massina are some of the top acts to look forward to at this show. Popular emcees including Etherton Beenie, Merciless Zimbabwe, DJ Cables, Godfatha Templeman and Cymplex Music are part of the bill.
