POLICE in Gokwe District have banned the carrying of dangerous weapons amid an increase in cases of murder, rape, and robbery where such weapons are used.

In a statement, Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said officers commanding police districts in the Midlands Province including Kwekwe, Gweru, Shurugwi, and recently Gokwe, are regulating officers for areas under them in terms of the law in a bid to contain surging violent cases involving dangerous weapons.

“Officer Commanding Police Gokwe Superintended Augustine Zimbili issued the prohibition notice in line with Section 4 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act Chapter 11:23. The ban applies for areas under Gokwe District running from 23 June 2023 to 22 September 2023.”

“This is due to the increase of cases of violence using weapons such as machetes, knobkerries, swords, knives, spears, daggers, catapults, and other offensive or traditional weapons,’ said Inspector Mahoko.

Those found on the wrong side will be prosecuted and if found guilty, liable to a fine not exceeding level 5 or jailed for six months.

“We are appealing to members of the community to report all those found in possession of such prohibited weapons at any police station to make use of suggestion boxes and WhatsApp platforms,” said Inspectors Mahoko.

He warned those who would be found on the wrong side of the law that police shall be out in full force to ensure they thwart any criminal activities.
