THE Zimbabwe Special Olympics golf team left Harare yesterday to take part in the annual South Africa Special Olympics Invitational Golf tournament set for Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Monday.
The eight-member team was selected at a national event at Chapman on September 5.
Smruti Mehta, the event coordinator, said they were going to fly the Zimbabwe flag high.
“We have improved a lot this year and we are happy that we will be representing the country this time around after we got our accreditation.
“Last year we went to the event with four boys and we managed to bring home two gold medals and I believe this year we will do much better as we have doubled the number of participants.
“ It was our first time last year so we went to learn and this time we are looking forward to bringing home more medals. The good thing is we now incorporate Bulawayo province and there will be two boys coming from the province. The increase in the number of golfers was because team coach Mike Baylis saw a lot of potential in the players and decided to draft them into the team.”
Mehta also hailed the sponsors who helped make this trip a possibility.
“There are friends who helped us with Toyota Zimbabwe as usual providing us with golf shirts, and kit bags while Air Zimbabwe provided nine free tickets for the journey,” said Mehta.
