BULAWAYO-based dance ensemble Inkululeko Yabatsha School of Arts (Iyasa) has paid tribute to its late founding member Sibonisise Sithole, affectionately known as “The Original”, as it celebrates 25 years in the arts industry.
Sithole died on October 29, 2020, aged 37, at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) following a short illness. She reportedly complained of chest pains the previous day and was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital before being transferred to UBH, where she died the following morning.

In a remembrance statement, Iyasa said the group’s silver jubilee would not be complete without acknowledging Sithole’s contribution as one of its pioneering members.
“Six years after your passing and all of us at IYASA still miss you. As we celebrate TWENTY FIVE years of IYASA, our story would not be complete without you,” reads the statement.
The ensemble described Sithole as its longest-serving female member and recalled her nomination for the 2016 National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) Outstanding Dancer accolade.
“As our longest-serving female member and a 2016 NAMA Outstanding Dancer nominee, your contribution and footprints remain part of our legacy. Gone from our sight, but forever part of our story. Rest well, The Original,” reads the statement.
Sithole joined Iyasa during its formative years around 2000, performing alongside fellow artistes, including Sandra Ndebele, Nomathamsanqa “Nkwali” Mkhwananzi, Roben Mlauzi and Futurelove Sibanda.

Her years with the ensemble saw her perform on stages beyond Zimbabwe, contributing to Iyasa’s growth and international exposure.
As the group marks its 25th anniversary, the tribute recognises Sithole’s place among the artistes who helped shape its journey and establish its standing in the creative industry.
