MATABELELAND Tuskers Cricket Franchise bowled superbly on the first day of the Logan Cup restricting Manicaland Mountaineers to a mere 150 runs after 49.5 overs at Queens Sports Club yesterday.
An economic Luke Jongwe led Matabeleland Tuskers’ bowling attack claiming five for 32 runs in 17 overs while Brian Vitori, who shrugged off an ankle injury to pass a late fitness test, claimed four wickets.
Stephen Chimamhiwa stepped in to claim a wicket.
The match started late due to a wet outfield but that did not deter Matabeleland Tuskers who are aware that a victory in this match will win them the Logan Cup as they managed to exploit the conditions.
“The game went pretty well and the conditions were pleasing for our bowlers as it was nice and cool. I think winning the toss was good for us as we went on to exploit the conditions which allowed the ball to swing and that was good for the seamers. Getting 10 wickets on the first day is always pleasing,” said Wayne James, Matabeleland Tuskers’ coach.
He said the onus now is on the batsmen to complement their bowlers by scoring runs.
“When we finished the sky was clearing and I’m sure today it’ll be a good weather to bat.
“The bowling unit has done its part, now the baton is on batsmen and I expect them to come to the party.”
Matabeleland Tuskers’ batting attack has openers Brian Chari and Nkosana Mpofu, Bonaparte Mujuru coming at number three, Keith Dabengwa and Richmund Mutumbami.
Skipper Godwill Mamhiyo is in the middle order and is expected to play a key role in ensuring that they pick a sizeable number of runs as he has been doing of late when wickets tumble.
Shingirai Masakadza, Roy Kaia, Tatenda Mapunga and Tapiwa Mufudza will lead Manicaland Mountaineers’ bowling attack.
