Goromonzi High School has commissioned a modern six – classroom Advanced Level block funded through contributions from parents and other stakeholders, underlining the growing role of community partnerships in supporting Government’s drive to improve access to quality education.
The new facility, officially commissioned on Tuesday by Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, comprises six fully equipped classrooms, staff offices, an administration office, ablution facilities and shower rooms.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Adv Ndudzo commended parents and stakeholders for mobilising resources to complete the project.
He said the development was a practical demonstration of the devolution agenda and the national development philosophy of shared responsibility.
“As you are aware, education is a basic human right and need to which Government is mandated to ensure that every Zimbabwean has access. The infrastructure developed here epitomises Government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality education, as well as the right to equal protection,” he said.
“Today we are witnessing devolution in action, with communities stepping forward like builders of bridges, linking aspiration to achievement. This is the spirit captured in His Excellency President Mnangagwa’s mantra, ‘Nyika inovakwa nevayo.'”
Adv Ndudzo said the school’s collaboration with Belvedere Teachers’ College during construction had created opportunities for young people to acquire practical vocational skills while contributing to national development.
“I am advised that the school partnered with Belvedere Teachers’ College for the construction work. This is a practical partnership that does more than build structures; it builds skills. Our youths have been given an opportunity to receive vocational training and gain experience that will serve them well beyond this project,” he said.
He said such partnerships would accelerate the country’s progress towards Vision 2030 by improving educational infrastructure while empowering communities.
Mashonaland East provincial finance, administration and human resources officer in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mr John Chikohomero, applauded parents for financing the project, saying their commitment reflected the importance they place on quality education.
He challenged learners to take full advantage of the improved learning environment to excel academically.
“As a province, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that equip learners with academic knowledge, technical competencies and entrepreneurial skills necessary for the modern world.
“I therefore urge learners to take full advantage of the opportunities that this new centre of excellence will offer.
“To teachers, continue inspiring excellence. To parents and stakeholders, continue supporting the school’s development agenda. May this centre of excellence serve as a beacon of academic excellence, innovation and community development for generations to come,” he said.
School Development Committee chairperson, Mr Madzishe Chipunza, said the committee would continue investing in infrastructure development to enhance the learning environment for both learners and staff.
Established in 1946, Goromonzi High School has more than 1 300 learners, including over 800 boarding learners.
The school recorded a 100 percent Advanced Level pass rate and a 97 percent Ordinary Level pass rate last year, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s top-performing Government schools.
