PETER Masuka has been on the gospel music radar for close to a decade and his music remained incubated, but if the positive response that his latest project Sungano (Covenant) is receiving in the music industry is anything to go by, then he has gotten a major breakthrough for his long-struggling musical career. Sungano is a seven-track album — distinguishable from his past works by its fluent instrumentals and voice projection — whose influence hovers all over it. The album is on high rotation on some of the radio stations in Zimbabwe, in public transport and at weddings across the country.
The musician has matured and the positive response to this latest album has given him a big boost of musical confidence.
In summation, this album is a little different from Masuka’s other works because the band worked extra hard on it.
The album, which is Masuka’s sixth since cutting his musical teeth at CPCA Anglican in Rusape, is selling like hot cakes, with about 10 000 copies having been already sold since its release two months ago.
Masuka sings with the True Vision Gospel Singers.
“The response is pleasing and the peak airplay and sales were during the Easter and Independence holidays. The album has created demand and we are producing more copies to satisfy the market demand.
“We are working on rehearsals and putting final touches to our distinct choreographies as we look forward to embarking on live performances to give our music the physical presence that has been lacking all along. Our fans have been urging us to popularise our brand by giving our music a face,” said Masuka.
Masuka said several denominations and corporate entities across the country were approaching them to perform at various conferences and breakfasts.
“The hand of God is manifesting itself in various ways and we are really grateful. The future looks bright. The pieces are grooving,” he said about the seven-track album, which was recorded and produced at Kunashe Studios in Mutare.
The album follows on the heels of another equally impressive album Rangarira, which contains a potential hit song Bani Remarangwanda (Dry Bones).
The song is a masterpiece and probably Masuka’s best when the past and present projects are bundled together — though it remains unknown.
Some of the songs on the new album include the hit song and title track Sungano.
The song has become a hit at most weddings, as its message resonates with the exchange and upholding of vows. On this song, Masuka proved how really good he is and music followers and critics alikeare beginning to warm to that.
Other songs on the album include Tawanirwe Nyasha, Pakamanikana, Jobho, Tirimunzira, Jesse and Tawanirwe Nyasha (instrumental).
