Gospel diva opens up about her life

GOSPEL diva Dorcas Moyo — who churned out popular tracks such as “Haakotsire”, “Zvininipise”, “Vakabuda”, “Tsamba” and “Kundirwira” — recently spoke about her life outside music circles.

The Mutare-based singer said her modest upbringing influenced her to remain a humble and down-to-earth character.

“My father, who was the family breadwinner, died when I was very young. I was raised by my mother and I often went to school barefooted. This upbringing shaped me to become the simple, next-door person that I am today,” Moyo said.

She added that although people who know her always treat her as a celebrity, she does not want to be handled as a public figure.

“I was born and bred in Goromonzi and I try by all means not to deviate from the norms and values that were ingrained in me during my youthful days,” the gospel diva said.

Moyo said whenever she is in Goromonzi, she spends as much time as she can with the people she grew up with, doing the same things they used to do in the past.

“Being a popular singer does not mean that one is superior,” added Moyo, who spoke from the United Kingdom where she is on tour.

The hit-maker said she behaves like any other daughter-in-law whenever she visits her in-laws in Gwanda.

“I do everything that is expected of a daughter-in law. I do the cooking, laundry and also weed the fields. Music and family life are two different things,” she added.

Pride, according to the singer, has had a negative effect on many public figures.

“As a Christian, I must lead by example. My life should act as a testimony so that God’s name can be glorified. Lastly, I would like to thank those supporting my work.”
