THE Government has allocated more than RTGS$1 million for construction of access roads at the Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation Scheme in Binga to facilitate smooth implementation of the project.
This follows a visit to the project situated about 20km from Binga centre by Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Mr Justin Mupamhanga recently where he called for an all stakeholders commitment to the project.
It was noted that the road network from the Binga-Kamativi road as well as the one linking the farm to the pump station on the Zambezi River are bad hence making it difficult for engineers to do maintenance work and repair leaking pipes.
The OPC responded by ordering the District Development Fund (DDF) to go on site and fix the roads.
Equipment was delivered on site last weekend and work has started raising hope that the project will now take off.
In an interview DDF acting director for roads, Engineer Goodwell Mapako said the work involved clearing and gravelling about 20km of road network.
“We have been tasked to construct roads at the Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation and we have started with the 10km stretch from the site to the pump station for easy movement. We have already started work and cleared about 2km as we prepare for gravelling.
“We are also going to do 7km from the main road in Manjolo to the irrigation site and also do 2,5km access road into the irrigation,” said Eng Mapako.
He said the aim is to have easy access to all points in and around the scheme. Eng Mapako said the road network project was expected to cost about $1million.
