AT least 42 Kariba families whose houses were destroyed by heavy rains in October, were last week Friday assisted by the Government.

Government availed tents and eight tonnes of maize meal to the victims who are mainly from Nyaminyami Rural District Council’s Ward 2.

Councillor Kudzanai Makanyaire said the hailstorm destroyed houses of 43 villagers while food stocks and clothes were also ruined by the heavy rains that swept through the ward in Kariba Rural at the end of October.

Ward 2, which borders with Kariba Lake, has within its boundaries Gatshe Gatshe and Kanyati communal lands.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Sarah Muhoni said the villagers desperately needed clothing amid revelations that some school going children had also lost their uniforms in the wake of the heavy rains.

Handing over the tents and mealie meal, Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo said Government continues to assist its citizens in line with the ‘Leaving No One and No Place’ mantra.

She also challenged communities to construct houses that can withstand any weather patterns.
