THE Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare has dismissed social media claims that all citizens aged 70 years and above are entitled to automatic monthly payments from the Government.
The clarification comes amid growing concern over misinformation surrounding social welfare programmes and follows recent reports of villagers allegedly being misled into registering for benefits through unauthorised schemes.
In a public notice issued by Permanent Secretary Mr Pfungwa Kunaka, Government has said the messages circulating on social media claiming that elderly persons should register at Makombe Building in Harare for monthly payments were false.
“The Department of Social Development has not called for mass registration of all persons over 70 at Makombe Building,” said Mr Kunaka.
He clarified that assistance for older persons is provided through established social welfare programmes and is based on vulnerability and other eligibility requirements outlined in the law.
“There is no programme paying every person aged 70+ monthly,” he added.
The ministry has since urged members of the public to verify information through official Government channels and warned citizens against paying money to access social welfare services.
“Do not pay anyone to access Social Welfare services. All ministry services are free,” said Mr Kunaka.
Authorities have encouraged members of the public seeking information on programmes for older persons to contact their nearest district social development office.
