The Government has significantly improved the mobility of Mberengwa Rural District Council (RDC) councillors by handing over 50 motorbikes, funded through devolution and internally generated resources.

This initiative is expected to strengthen councillors’ engagement with their constituents, enhance service delivery, and expedite development projects across the district’s 35 wards.

The intervention is particularly crucial for rural communities, where transportation challenges often hinder effective governance and service provision. In addition to Mberengwa, councillors from Chirumanzu RDC also received motorbikes, further underlining the Government’s commitment to improving efficiency and accessibility for local leaders.

Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister Albert Mavhunga, officiated at the handover ceremony held at the Mberengwa RDC offices.

He said the initiative aligns with the broader national vision of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

“Today’s ceremony is further confirmation of our commitment to the full implementation of Vision 2030 and related policy drivers to becoming an upper-middle-income economy, as pronounced by His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe,” said Deputy Minister Mavhunga.

He added that through the motorbike programme, the Government is reaffirming its commitment to the turnaround of all local authorities.

Deputy Minister Mavhunga noted that the programme is part of the Government’s broader devolution agenda, which prioritises resource allocation to local authorities to drive grassroots development.

The Director of Provincial Co-ordination in the Midlands Province, Mr Kudakwashe Machako, commended the Second Republic’s focus on tangible, people-centred development initiatives.

“We are celebrating the milestones and gains registered by Mberengwa Rural District Council in procuring 50 motorbikes for councillors. These motorbikes will facilitate our mobility, enabling us to connect with constituents more effectively,” he said.

Mberengwa RDC chairperson, Councillor Garisikai Moyo, hailed the Government’s devolution strategy.

“We managed to secure this on our own to improve service delivery. This will enhance their (councillors’) mobility in their respective wards, resulting in the effective and efficient co-ordination of developmental activities throughout the 35 wards,” he said.

Clr Moyo added that equipment recapitalisation is a key driver in the achievement of the National Development Strategy 1.
